Hi, leaders!

With same-sex marriage now legal in the United States, a lot of people have taken their stand on this. Some used rainbow profile pictures, while others are boldly taking a stand against it. As leaders, I believe we should be responsible for how we react to this. I also believe it is an opportunity for us to win more souls for Christ.

Here are some things you might want to consider before you react:

  1. What is your goal in sharing/posting/commenting/reacting? What do you want to accomplish? What effect would your goal have?
  1. We can’t change people’s minds when they are already closed. Only the gospel can change them.

“Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you.”

– Matthew 7:6

If you’re reacting to change the LGBT community’s mind, it would take more than that. In fact, instead of engaging them, we might just push them away. What they need is a personal encounter with Jesus.

  1. Always be prepared to give an answer.

“But in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect”

– 1 Peter 3:15

It would be better if you knew more about the effects of same-sex marriages on our society and our stand against it. If you’re reading this and you don’t know our stand, we believe what the Bible says, specifically: marriage is for one man and one woman. Let’s encourage one another to stand by the Bible in this.

The Bible tells us that all sins are the same (James 2:10), meaning our sins are just as heavy as theirs. What’s important is that we experience godly sorrow, repent and turn away from these sins.

The Bible also says that we should give our answers with gentleness and respect.

  1. Our goal is to Honor God and Make Disciples.

Our duty is to share the gospel and to teach them to obey Christ. This we do through social media and in our real world interactions. We need to trust that God would work in their hearts and minister to them. Our part is to Engage, Establish, Equip and Empower.

“Whoever restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.”

– Proverbs 17:27

“The heart of the righteous ponders how to answer, but the mouth of the wicked pours out evil things.”

– Proverbs 15:28
